LIMCA BOOK OF RECORDS QUIZ 2011

I had participated in the Limca Book of Records Quiz 2011 at the City Levels in St. Agnes School, Kharagpur with Aritra Dasgupta. Our school Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT, Kharagpur had emerged the Winners this year defeating DAV Model School; KV, AFS, Salua; KV, No. 02, Kharagpur, SER Mixed HS School & St. Agnes School (Home Team) – all of whom were brilliant quizzards.

The Limca Book of Records Quiz is organised by Coca Cola India Limited in association with Derek O'Brien & Associates (the quiz is conducted by these people). The theme of this year was "INDIA AT HER BEST".

After winning the Inter School Round and emerging as City Winners from Kharagpur, Aritra and myself had been selected for the National Semi Finals which was held at Reliance World, Sarat Bose Road, Kolkata (City Winners from Haldia & Kolkata were also there). There were 79 other schools from different cities like Dehradun, Ghaziabad, Calicut, Mumbai etc. DOB&A were good enough to provide the questions of the Semi Final Round on their website (after the semis obviously !!) and I have put them down here with their answers.

Take a look at some great quizzing questions and try to answer them yourself before checking out the answers. If you are really in a quizzing mood, take the test in 30 minutes and then mail me at anweshtm@gmail.com for the evaluation and answers.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012 CARDS

Well, 2012 is approaching fast with just 21 days left in 2011. And this makes me get up from bed. That is, to say, I need to be on schedule to make my own Happy New Year Cards. I have been collecting recipient's details from the start of the month but still lot of work needs to be done. Selection of photos, print media standardization, buying stamps and finally putting those cards into some obnoxious envelopes and posting them through the not-very-fast Indian Postal Service !!

Let's see if I can make it on time.......

By the way, what are your plans for the winter hols, Christmas and New Year ?? I'll be missing home on Christmas as I will be leaving for New Delhi but I won't miss the New Year Eve party at my home.

Now, let me get back to my project........codenamed "OPERATION HNY-2012" !!

See you soon.........till then, bye bye, stay safe, be well & keep travelling on your favourite TT-XPRES :)

HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

10th December is celebrated as the Human Rights Day, all over the world.

The date was chosen to honor the United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights(UDHR), the first global enunciation of human rights and one of the first major achievements of the new United Nations. The formal establishment of Human Rights Day occurred at the 317th Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly on 4 December 1950, when the General Assembly declared resolution 423(V), inviting all member states and any other interested organizations to celebrate the day as they saw fit.
The day is normally marked by both high-level political conferences and meetings and by cultural events and exhibitions dealing with human rights issues. In addition, it is traditionally on 10 December that the five-yearly United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights and Nobel Peace Prize are awarded. Many governmental andnongovernmental organizations active in the human rights field also schedule special events to commemorate the day, as do many civil and social-cause organisations.
The theme for 2006 was the struggle against poverty, taking it as a human rights issue. Several statements were released on that occasion, including the one issued by 37 United Nations Special Procedures mandate holders
Today, poverty prevails as the gravest human rights challenge in the world. Combating poverty, deprivation and exclusion is not a matter of charity, and it does not depend on how rich a country is. By tackling poverty as a matter of human rights obligation, the world will have a better chance of abolishing this scourge in our lifetime....Poverty eradication is an achievable goal.
The 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights occurred on 10 December 2008, and the UN Secretary-General launched a year-long campaign leading up to this anniversary. Because the UDHR holds the world record as the most translated document (with more than 360 language versions available), organizations around the globe used the year to focus on helping people everywhere learn about their rights.
